We get there and it’s of no surprise that the house is huge and very beautiful. I believe the owners are the parents or parents-in-law of the owner of the production company.

I’m not even sure who the client is for the commercial.

We would not be able to take these kinds of jobs if we were not home schooling. But because we do homeschool, and Dick is out of town, I have to take my whole crew to the job.

There’s bagels for breakfast. Awesome, we skipped breakfast to make it on time.

The woman in the pink shirt is Thelma’s “mom” and for some reason, I didn’t get a picture of the “dad”.

I’m going around taking pics of the house because it’s quite nice.

 There’s a pool outside with a beautiful verandah.

The family room is where they are shooting.

This is the production assistant, who could not have been cooler. She and I were talking and it came up that we homeschool and that she, too, was home-schooled all the way through high school. She was saying to her crewmates, “See? There’s NORMAL people who homeschool!” (Referring to us. I’m not sure that we qualify as “normal” but okay. LOL).

Girlfriend is super cute and stylin’.

While Thelma was filming, Louise, Benz and I were in the formal living room, chilling’ and waiting.

I like the sofas and the rug but I would need more color on the wall. Regardless, still beautiful.

Seeing that I was toting a baby with me, the owner, who was sweet as could be, let me use her grandchildren’s pack-n-play.

And with Benz being in the 85th% for weight at 20lbs, I’m more than happy to put him in baby prison for a little bit so my arms can rest.

He’s enjoying it though…so far.

Louise brought along a coloring book to keep herself busy.

And here’s the director who is also working the camera.

Thelma’s part is where her and “mom” just get home from grocery shopping but the daughter runs in first and then says, “Mommy, wait til you see what Daddy got!”

Not much of a line but she pulled it off fabulously…and I’m not saying that just to because she’s my daughter.

“Mom” comes in carrying  bag of groceries and see’s a big flat screen TV.

She’s not happy about it at first, “What’s this?”

Then the dad goes into a spiel about how great the viewing experience is with a flat screen TV and how he got everything for a great deal through a credit card promotion. Yada yada yada…

Shortly after they were all set up and started filming, Benz decided he was sleepy so he started to cry a little. His crying could be heard in the background so the production assistant came in to let me know. However, I was already on it…I had whipped out my boob as fast as I could and shoved it into my baby’s mouth. And that was the end of that.

Since having to care for the baby now, there’s not alot of time for me to watch and take pictures of my girls in action. I’m busy being a milk machine.

He’s so sweet when he nurses. I love it.

And he’s out! Wow, I need a haircut. Getting Rapunzel long. Crystal Gayle long. The kind of long that no longer looks good, it looks like you’re too lazy to cut it. Which seems to be…well, which IS the case for me.

Look how sweet! OMG, I just adore this little guy.

The owner was so surprised that Benz was so easy, didn’t hardly make a peep, and was sleeping so soundly.

After the shoot had wrapped up, Thelma and Louise chatted with some of the crew and other actors. It was a short but fun shoot. Thelma was so over the moon after it was all done.

I’m trying to figure out all the logistics because Dick is out of town, I have the baby and the girls are also supposed to be at their homeschool co-op today but Louise will be doing the shoot and I need to drive Thelma to co-op. Luckily, we can still take these kinds of jobs because we have flexibility with our schedules, unlike if we were in public school.

We get to the shoot and the make-up artist is the same one that did the shoot for Thelma when she was making cookies for a cook book. (I can’t believe how much Thelma’s hair has grown since then!)

The house is just gorgeous inside so I go around and take pictures.

The girls go around to explore.

I’m actually not really sure this shoot is supposed to be a commercial or just print material.

I guess it’s suppose to be a travel tips application where there’s a family (A mom, dad and Louise) that is getting ready to go on a trip, they use an iPad app to get some travel tips, and presto…all of a sudden they’re in the Caymans (or somewhere exotic like that)…which is why they are using this pool as a location to make it seem like they’re in the Caymans.

I can totally see why they selected this house because it has a great view and it “could” look like they’re at a resort in the Caymans.

Check out this outdoor kitchen area. I love outdoor living spaces like these.

The owner of the house is actually the mother-in-law of the director of the shoot and she was super duper nice. Seeing thatI had the kids, she showed me a room where her grandkids stay and let us chill there while we were waiting on Louise.

The girls just loved it!

Who can blame them.

Benz seemed amused too.

So while we were upstairs, we didn’t really get to watch Louise at work too much.

But, I was able to sneak a peak from the window.

This is a shot where the “family” is packed up and ready to leave.

Look who shows up on set? You see her? It’s Grandma Fanny Mae!

Fanny Mae takes an hour or so from work to come watch Louise while I take Thelma to the co-op. She’s so wonderful.

Benz is getting lots of love and attention, as usual.

The next shoot is of the family by the pool.

And actually, Louise gets to go swimming!

I’m told the pool has been heated to a warm 92F. That’s warm! I guess they didn’t want my girl to freeze her buns off since it was only about high 60s, low 70s outside. See how Benz and I are wearing long sleeves?

It turns out the “Mom” is being played by someone who I went to gradeschool with. I haven’t seen her in ages! Small world.

After they were done shooting, Louise gets to play in the pool before the next shot.

Yeah, she works “hard” for her money.

Since we are shooting for almost a full day, lunch is provided…and by one of our favorite pizza joints.

So after a “hard” day’s work of swimming and pizza, here’s Louise on our way home.

Luckily, as I may have mentioned, my parents are the best of the best and they took the day off work to babysit for us.

The shoot was split up into AM and PM sessions so they could catch the sunrise and sunset. During the day, it’s just too dang hot and the sun is too stark.

MORNING SHOOT

Our call time to be at the shoot was 6AM. However, with all the things that we have to do outside of “modeling”, Dick and I pulled all-nighters and didn’t sleep a wink because we would have had to wake up at 4AM anyway to get ready and the drive was a 45 minute drive to the shoot location.

See how dark it is on our drive there?

The girls were so excited about doing the shoot, they were wide awake at 4AM.

Good job girls!

I don’t catch sunrises often so this was a real nice treat.

We started out at the plant where they manufacture the boats. Metropolis has several large boat companies around neighboring small cities because we have great access to lakes and such a large community of lake enthusiasts as well as retirees.

Just beautiful!! I’m not a morning person (well…if you count being up already from the previous night then I am) but catching the sunrise off the lake is SO worth it.

This is one of the boats that will be carrying the camera crew and director.

It’s one gorgeous day and not too hot…yet…

This is one of our camera guys. That thing looks heavy.

The other boat is another boat that they are shooting. Those are the models in that boat. We feel really special now because our boat just has our family and the other boat looks packed!

The boat we got was super phat!!

The crew’s boat rides along so they can shoot video and pictures.

Dick enjoyed himself WAY TOO MUCH being at the helm.

He wants us to get a boat.

From what I hear from boat owners, it’s best to have friends who own a boat rather than own your own boat. I just don’t see us having enough time to make it worthwhile. And anyways, Benz is too young still.

I was thinking though that my Aunt Queen Latifa, would LOVE this boat.

You remember how much she likes to go fishing and how we went on her tiny boat and then I got the biggest fish for the day.

Most of the shoots are of us smiling while riding around, having fun on “our” boat.

My gums were getting all dried out from smiling so much with the wind hitting our teeth.

I was joking to Dick that we had cottonmouth.

You know how much I love feet shots…I’m kinda like Quentin Tarantino in that sense.

After riding around in the boat and having the wind blow through your hair, I realized…my hair is really tangled! I could hardly run my fingers through  my hair and it felt so dingy dirty. Bleh. There’s no hair and make-up person either. I guess they figured it was going to get messed up anyway so why bother? Makes sense.

We had the natural matted look going.

Dick,being the pretty boy that he is, was more concerned than anyone about their hair. His kept flipping up cause all the wind was pushing it back. And, since he sprayed his hair, it stayed that way. You know I had to crack on him a few times. LOL.

Here, the camera guy is on our boat to shoot the girls while the boat is riding around, so he can catch the wind in their hair.

Without any straps to secure him to the boat, he’s leaning over the edge of the boat and making me super nervous.

He’s just using his feet to hang on and if Dick made any sudden stops, dude would definitely go flying! Oh the dangers of being a photographer! Luckily, nothing happened.

 The director kept telling Dick to smile more.

“You’ve got that serious, good-looking-guy look that every guy wants but I need you to smile and look more approachable for my boat ad.”

Dick was like, I have a look? Yes, honey, you do. Now stop trying to look too cool for school and smile.

Much better.

Dick kept boasting about his magnificent driving skills. “Look! See how good I am? And I’ve never really even driven a boat!”

He was actually a great boat driver. He was so impressed with himself (as he usually is) since he’s only driven a boat a couple of times. At the casting audition, he hinted that he’s had much more experience than he actually does. I was like, you haven’t driven a boat much. He blew it off,  “It’s not like driving a boat is that hard. Driving boats is easy. There’s not much too it.”

Here we stopped so they could take pictures of us having fun in the water. I told the director if they had a good editor that could give me a sixpack, I would wear a bikini but I’m super glad he declined. I’m pretty happy with my weight loss progress since having Benz two months ago (Don’t be hatin’. I’m nursing, have ginormous, flappy boobs, and a mushy, flabby stomach. Feel better?) but I’m ecstatic to be wearing the lifejacket (which is normally not the case).

The director bribed the girls with $5 each to jump out as far as they could.

They would have done it regardless but I guess money is always a motivator.

And he paid up too! Really nice guy.

HOME FOR LUNCH SLEEP

We finished up around 10AM so we head home so I can check on Benz.

The girls pass out in the car. We’re ALL exhausted actually.

Benz was great and didn’t hardly cry at all.

And even though I pumped, of course, he still wants Boobie!

My sweet baby. I just adore this litte guy and missed him while we were gone.

Dick and I ended up passing out as well and slept right up until the point that we needed to wake up to head back for the evening shoot…around 5PM.

BACK TO “WORK”

Here they are getting ready for the evening shoot.

There are some real spectacular mansions on the lake.

I’m sitting there wondering what these people do for a living.

Here we are docking at someone’s house to shoot a little “get-together” with friends.

And they shoot the kids jumping off the dock.

We shot up to the point that the sun was going down.

Really a fabulous day on the lake.

THE STUDIO

The studio we were shooting in was stocked full of stuff for the shoot.

There were all kinds of home accessories that I was just salivating over.

It reminded me how much I love having different, interesting pieces that do not match.

I’m over matching.

I need to work on my collection.

THE SHOOT

This is where Thelma will be shooting with “Mommy”.

Okay, so I’m a little bitter I don’t get to play my own child’s mommy!

MAKE-UP

There’s a make-up artist on hand to do hair and make-up.

You’re thinking…make-up…on a 9-year old…uh huh.

Don’t be freakin’ out. This is not a child pageant where they put TRANNY make-up on 5 year olds.

This is just to make her face look naturally rosy and glowing so she’ll stand out on camera.

All the make-up artist does is put a few touches of blush, eyeshadow to brighten Thelma’s eyes, and a natural sheen for lips .

See? Not pageant. Not tranny. Lovely.

THE SHOOT

Now they’re ready to shoot.

While they’re shooting, someone brought Louise and I some cookies. Pretty good.

Thelma and “Mom” didn’t really bake the cookies. They were already premade.

Meanwhile, Louise found a spot so that she could color her coloring book.

I know I’m partial because I’m her Mom, her real Mom, but she looks just adorable.

Actually, the “mom” was super nice. Don’t think that I be hatin’.

I love how her shirt really stands out against the mostly monotone background.

It’s funny, the whole time she was shooting, she was talking to the “mom” about soccer.

We didn’t know what product she was modeling or who the company was until we got to the studio for the shoot.

The product was DENTEK FUN FLOSSERS for kids.

On the way to the studio, Louise and I were chatting.

“I hope it’ll be fun today. I had a lot of fun last time.

But, you never know, today might be fun too.”

Last time was when Louise was doing ads for RED GOLD pasta sauces.

AT THE STUDIO

When we got to the studio, the photographer was still finishing up some shots of their other products so we hung out for a sec.

While waiting, I made use of the backdrop and chair that was already set up.

Turned out to be a great picture with my over-enthusiastic Louise.

I was sensing some boredom and since we had to hang for a little bit, I suggested Louise maybe draw and color something.

She wants me to draw it and she colors it.

But I tell her that if she wants to be a better artist, she’s going to have to practice.

With kids, they’re hand muscles aren’t steady enough and the only way to be a better artist is like everything else, you must PRACTICE. It’s all muscle memory. Plus, it’s more meaningful to me to see something that came from her heart and that she did ALL on her own.

After she was done, I could see the PROUD look in her eyes that it was a piece she had created in its entirety.

TIME TO WORK

As soon as Louise finished her drawing, it was time to get to work. Good timing!

Like I said, the job called for a “child hand model”…because they were only going to shoot her hands with the product.

Last night I was busy giving Louise a “manicure”, making sure to trim the length and remove all remnants of black dirt from underneath her nails…any proof of my slacking in the mommy department.

The shot at different angles to get different perspectives.

Luckily, it was just a hand shot on this one. I like the cynical look she’s giving the photographer, who happened to be French and reminded me of a much slimmer version of Gerard de Pardieu.

FLOSS AND PLAY

Dentek had specifically designed and marketed the floss to be playful, hopefully thereby enticing the kids to floss and play too. Therefore, the creative thought it would be cool to take some pictures of her playing with the floss.

The FUN FLOSSERS can be connected together and kids can use their imagination to build all sorts of stuff.

MORE THAN JUST A PAIR OF HANDS

Louise had picked out her own outfit that day, which turned out to be PERFECT because it was the same colors as the floss and the creative director wanted to take further shots of the product with Louise, using her face as well.

After taking several shots, the team would review to photos to see if the shots taken were sufficient.

Good thing her two front teeth are almost fully grown out so she doesn’t look like a METH HEAD anymore.

ALL DONE

When we were done, Dentek gave Louise a bag of her own of FUN FLOSSERS.

Louise was beyond THRILLED.

She was already talking about NOT SHARING with anyone!

Luckily, she had a change of heart later.

We do our thang and then Thelma wants to look around. She goes ahead of me into the next room  that has all the visitor information. Moments later she comes out, raving excitedly:

“Mommy, you and Daddy are famous!”

I’m totally confused and I think the lateness has her DAZED.

“What are you talking about?”

“See! See! You’re famous!”

It’s the ad we did for tourism around Metropolis long ago…and all lit up!

How glamorous is that? LOL

Remember when my neighbor, Ozzie, gave me a copy of the magazine that had our ad?

Well it was the last thing I expected to see while half-dazed and tired at a rest area.

This is the first time I’ve seen a picture of me lit up like that.

How nice to be “famous”. I’ll try not to let it get to my head. LMAO.

THE STUDIO

The studio is very impressive with tons of equipment, lenses, set stuff, cameras, computers, etc.

I don’t know anything about commercial photography. Shoot, I hardly know anything about regular photography. I am not a technically trained photographer. I guess you could say, I have THE EYE… as many people tell me. Except, I have TWO EYES!

I’ve taken 3 photography courses. One was a basic 101 Photography class that was absolutely worthless. The other two were darkroom classes (This was back when Digital was just getting its start.) I did love darkroom but it’s time consuming and now that I can do those things digitally, impatient Jane prefers digital editing.

Funny enough, I hardly know how to use my own camera. How’s that for an AHHHHTIST? I guess you could say I’m a self-trained photographer with not too much training. I mostly shoot in full automatic mode and all the magic comes in with the editing…and the EYE. Good thing I have the EYE otherwise,  I would have nothing. Well, I have the OTHER EYE.

To top that, I’ve also never taken an editing or Photoshop class. My own editing is self taught and just evolved through playing around. I would love to learn more about Photoshop. You can do so many interesting things. Imagine what I could do if I actually LEARNED something…except there is NO time. Photoshop is a MONSTER and this mom has no time to go back to school or even take classes!

THE CLIENT: RED GOLD

The client is Red Gold, they make can tomatoes and sauces, such as salsa and marinara.

The label looks quite familiar. There is a possibility we might have used this brand of canned tomatoes before…that is if they can whole tomatoes. We don’t do alot of salsa or marinara.

WAITING

When we get to the studio, there is another girl who is not done with her shoot.

So we sit and wait and watch.

Very nice.

LOUISE’S TURN

Now it’s Louise’s turn. The photographer sets her at the table.

The shot is from the waist up only so it doesn’t matter what she’s wearing below.

The photographer’s satff shows Louise what to do.

She is to dip the breadstick into the marinara sauce and act like she’s eating it.

Just ACT like she’s going to eat it. However, Louise is tempted to actually eat the breadstick.

Prop food is NOT to be eaten, remember? (Click HERE for a shoot I did a little bit ago.)

It was very interesting seeing how commercial photography is done. Although, I’m not sure if this is something I would enjoy.

Too many small details like… the spaghetti looks like it’s too lumpy or have too many voids or needs to look more wet…or is it moist? Small details are SUPER important.

Here they are using this mirror and can of paint to deflect the light because the shadows were no good.

The photographer will take a few shots, have his other employees check how it looks on the computer and magnified to make sure the picture is crisp.

If not, adjustments are made and more shots are taken.

This can be quite a lengthy process. We were there for a few hours.

I take my own pictures with my point and shoot. Here are the shots I take of Louise.

In between shots and while they are making adjustments, they tell Louise to draw to keep from being bored.

In this shot Louise is trying hard to pay attention to the photographer’s instructions and isn’t paying attention to her dipping hand. She dips the bread a little too much to where it spews over the sides. Too mochi! (This is one of me and Lucy’s funny talk…it’s kinda like an Italian accent but the “mochi” came from Japanese ice cream mochi balls.) Clean-up on aisle 6 please! Although, isn’t this more true to life when kids eat cafeteria food?

Louise had a great time and really enjoys modeling. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not one of those Mom’s pushing for my kids to be the next model, or actress, or singer, or beauty queen. I want them to do WHATEVER they enjoy, so long as they have a passion for it. And, unlike most Asianp and Persian parents, I definitely DON’T want them to be doctors. Definitely not doctors. (Mom, stop gasping!) It’ll be just my luck that they choose to become doctors. Whatever. So long as you LOVE it! (But hopefully not!)

I actually have only been to a few auditions since many of the jobs around here, they just look at pictures that the agent submits and select the people they like. I also thought we would be auditioning in front of a live person but instead, the audition is videotaped and sent to the client.

Therefore, I didn’t prepare much and I think it showed. Dick and I briefly reviewed the lines before taping and I was making fun of how cheesy he was saying the lines. We didn’t really practice and  didn’t even think to memorize them. Shows how much I know. Oh well. You live and you learn.

But that’s why we try to make it to as many auditions as possible. Practice. No, I’m not looking to be the next movie star but when you do something, why not do it well?

I get a call last week from my agent saying that HGTV would like to use me for another Fine Living commercial. I’ve done a few of these and had a great time.

These kinds of commercials they shoot for Fine Living are usually a short tutorial clip of how one can entertain at their home simply and beautifully.

This one is sponsored by Hyundai and the premise of the script is that there is a hostess who has a SPA PARTY at her home for her good girlfriends. I’m one of the girlfriends.

ON SET: THE HOUSE

I absolutely LOVE the house where we are shooting at. It’s a historic, quaint Craftsman home, nostalgically decorated inside with some excellent old pieces. You can tell, cozy and comfort are important to this young couple that lives here…and they are actually the owners of a vintage furniture store with the same look, feel and style. Just FABULOUS!

Look at the chairs, fan, table and old books!

I love how this is put together and especially the painting of a fashion designer’s mannequin and how it’s presented on a projector screen easel (I’m not really sure what those are called).

This is an old, rusty bike that they had mounted on their wall. Genius!

Simple, nostalgic, beautiful…and with character.

These hands were mounted sticking out the wall as soon as you enter the door. They caught me by surprise. Cute!

What a fantastic old fireplace!

I really dig this old movie projector. That’s awesome!

THE CREW: SETTING-UP

The producer and props designer are hard at work setting everything up.

All of the home-owner’s things were covered with simple white sheets from a bed set…even the fitted ones.

The producer is ironing the sheets so that they are nice and straight.

See how lovely this chair was transformed by using a simple white sheet? The green ribbon is spectacular.

The props designer does a fabulous job making everything look beautiful. She’s setting up the SPA table.

Just like a spa. Maybe even nicer!

I always get so many great, simple ideas to decorate from these shoots.

Our camera man, who the producer complimented as getting some of the best shots and being one of the best around here.

I know the make-up artist on the job. She and I used to play tennis at the same gym. Not only does she do make-up, she does hair and she makes sure you always look good, paying attention to all the small details.

So here we are, the girlfriends who are going to the spa party.

These chicas were awesome. I felt like we were old friends. We got along great!

Me and the “hostess” of the party. She’s been shooting since morning whereas the girlfriends and I only needed to work half day.

So, typically I can’t stand having my hair pulled back in a pony tail (yes, because of my enormous head) but since I’m the only one with long hair and it’s a “spa party” I’m the token ponytail girl. Oh well, I’ll just pray it looks good for the commercial.

OTHER PICTURES OF THE SHOOT

Lighting. Obviously, lighting is important.

Since only the tops of the chairs will be seen, it does’t matter that the bottom is exposed.

The kitchen. This is where shooting took place in the morning.

Now it’s where the producer able to see what the camera man sees thru a monitor here.

That way, she is able to verify angles, lighting, and if they got the shot they needed.

THE FOOD

I almost forgot about the food. Can you believe it? Me, forget about food.

Because this is party, you need party food! The table has been set with a most spectacular spread.

Meringue Oranges.

Fruits.

Some type of endive with red peppers and mashed potatoes???

I don’t know what this is but it looks good.

But, as the producer reminds us:

“Prop food should NEVER be eaten!”

Food used for props are made to look appetizing, colorful and beautiful but they are made for AESTHETIC purposes only. They don’t actually taste good PLUS they have been sitting out all day.

I saw a green smoothie (In the pic above, to the back, under the light switch) that looked like a refreshing kiwi shake with the black seeds and topped off  with a sprig of rosemary. Well, I should have been tipped off by the rosemary (Rosemary doesn’t go with smoothies but it LOOKS beautiful). When I went to smell it I was greeted with an unhappy surprise…it smelled like MAYONAISE with PEPPER (hence the black seeds). No wonder the sprig of rosemary was able to stand up straight with no assistance. Nice trick!

This was probably the most fun I’ve had on a shoot. It was like hanging out with girfriends on the set. Since I’m a do-it-yourself girl I’ll totally be able to use these tips. I’ll totally have to throw a party like this for my girlfriends.

Remember I mentioned that Dick and I do some acting and modeling on the side? Well, we almost never get to see the work nor do we hardly receive copies of our work. Occasionally, friends will see our commercials and mention it to us but since we hardly watch TV, we almost never see the commercials.

Just yesterday, our dear neighbors, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, who are are the nicest, coolest, neighbors anyone can ask for, came over brought over a copy of one of our print ads (that we shot a year ago and is just now in print?).  Super exciting!

They made me position my arms some weird way but overall, the picture is quite nice. Shot right as the sun was coming down.

Actually, our entire family was recruited for this shoot for print and there’s a commercial but this is the only thing we’ve seen so far. Let me know if you happen to see us!
