Jane, Face Painter.

Louise decided she wanted me to face paint for her birthday and so what does a Mom do but oblige.

My dear friend, June, lends me her face painting kit…the same one we used for Halloween.

And actually, I have some experience face painting from a few years ago where I used to do it at a local Farmer’s Market.

I let the girls pick out what they wanted, provided it wasn’t too difficult.

Here’s how they turned out:

They don’t look exactly like the pics but the girls were happy with the result regardless.

If they’re happy, I’m happy.

Your first look at an $8 bill!!

Louise is turning 8 this year and is in HIGH ANTICIPATION of her birthday. She’s been planning this since…well…last year.

Except, Louise isn’t the only one in anticipation…so is Thelma. Thelma had an idea to make an $8 bill for Louise with her face on it, rather than some boring President. Cute idea! So, I told Thelma I would help her out.

First, we went online and looked for images of bills. Of course, there wasn’t an $8 bill. So, I took an image I found of a $2 bill.

Second, Thelma helped me pick out a picture of Louise.

Then, I took the image and turned it green to match the money.

After that, I masked out an oval, cut, paste and added the “8s” (which were a font Thelma picked out).

It still has the “TWO” written everywhere but that was too much for me to try to fix.

Not perfect but I thought it turned out great anyways.

We cut out the front and back and glued them together.

Because Thelma was so excited, we had made this $8 bill early and, of course, she just couldn’t wait to give it to her. So, we gave Louise an early birthday present.

Louise was so excited!

It ended up being a very creative gift and Louise loved having her very own money!

“Do you think I could use this to buy something?”

LOL.

Let’s not get Mommy in trouble for counterfeiting money.

Abstract Orchids with Punches of Color.

Are you sick of orchids yet? If not, here are more. I took some of the ones I already edited and added punches of color to make them more abstract.

I’ve added some of the original RAW/unedited pictures to show you what they looked like before I put my Ahhh-tist touch to them.

After many hours of editing, here’s the result:

Zooming in and cropping is a must in editing!

You just have to see which pictures have potential.

And get rid of all the unnecessary junk.

This Jane loves making SOMETHING out of NOTHING.

You would be absolutely surprised to see how all these really looked before I edited them.

I love how they turned out so much that I may blow some of these up and print them on canvas.

THE LADY SLIPPERS

Lady Slipper Orchids are one of my favorite varieties of orchid. They are just gorgeous!!

They are called Lady Slipper due to the slipper-shape pouches of the flower.

If you’re a Lady Slipper Lover, you’ll be sure to appreciate these.

Ok, not to toot my own horn but I really LOVE how these pictures turned out.

Our homeschool co-op encourages and allows kids to explore their inner creativity.

On this day, the middle schoolers used their hands, literally & physically, to create art.

Swan head. Awesome!

Louise tries to copy my drawings.

Louise loves art and had seen my sketches of the stick figures I draw laying around. So, she took it upon herself to try to copy my drawings.

Here’s what she came up with:

She did so good! I love her adorable stick figures!

I love that she is practicing to draw. It doesn’t matter that she’s copying something. So long as she practices because the more practice she gets, the steadier her hand will get and she will only get better. Love it honey!

Louise and I were at home together while Dick took Thelma to her training academy. So, Louise wanted to do something TOGETHER and thought it would be neat to work on a painting together. Normally, since the kids always want help with stuff, I would be like, “It’s more special if you do it by yourself” but actually, I thought this was a GREAT IDEA.

So, we got our acrylic paints out.

Now you don’t have to be an artistic prodigy to be able to do this with your child.

All I did was take a pencil and scribble a pattern on the paper.

Then we worked together to color in the spaces.

I used that copper color at first but ended up hating it so I painted over it.

ART is like that. You can change your mind whenever.

After we painted the base, I got inspired by that white swirly blob you see at the lower left corner of the page and we decided to repeat this pattern across the top of the painting.

Then, at the end, we decided to paint the white swirlies with glow in the dark paint.

I let Louise paint the glowing parts.

Turned out pretty cool!

Silly Bandz: The new friendship bracelet? Let’s go back to the old days.

When I was in middle school, making friendship bracelets were all the rage and I was the queen of making string bracelets. No really. I was.

I would spend hours upon hours knotting these colorful bracelets, all the while trying to come up with new patterns and styles to impress the kids at school. I once made one that was 2 inches thick! I’m not even sure how long that took but after refreshing myself on how to make them again, I’m thinking it probably took me at least 3-4 days of non-stop knotting.

Kids would make them and trade them with their friends, stacking up a collection full on one’s arm.

These days, the friendship bracelet has been replaced by those stupid plastic things that have all the different shapes…SILLY BANDZ.

These SILLY THINGS INDEED are all the rage these days with kids…AND SOME ADULTS…sporting them. Coming in all different shapes like Dinosaurs or Pets or Princess…but who cares? The end up just looking like one big tangled gob of a mess on your arm.

SILLY BANDZ rank right up there with those FUGLY CROCS. Why the heck would any adult wear these things! Sorry if I offended any of my friends who happen to either wear Crocs or Silly Bandz. I still love you! Anyway, I gotta give props to the geniuses who are making BAZILLIONS off of molded silicone.

Kids are so preoccupied with these plastic things that I’ve read they are causing quite the disruption in school with kids fighting over them, kids playing with them and not focusing on the teacher, etc. They’ve even outlawed them in some schools!

FABULOUS FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS

When the girls had their BESTIE come and spend the night, we had stopped by a BORDERS BOOK TENT SALE just to browse and see what they had.

This is when I came across the FABULOUS FRIENDSHIP BRACELET KIT.

OMG, excitement!

I was so inspired and excited to teach the girls on how to make the bracelets and KNEW they would just love it. However my excitement quickly abated when I discovered that teaching how to make these bracelets was actually NOT SO EASY. I forgot that I was about 11-12 years old when I was making these things and the girls are only 7-8. There’s a pattern that you have to remember and once you get into the groove of things, it’s pretty easy.

OUR FIRST BRACELETS

So I haven’t used the kit because the instructions of the book are not very clear and I don’t have time to figure it out right now. However, I remembered how to do a basic one and, after discovering how difficult it might be for the girls, decide to start the girls off with the bare basics.

The friendship bracelets are made of cross-stitching thread (Or floss, as they call it.).

What’s great is that you are able to be creative and make all sorts of colors and patterns. It’s a very addictive craft.

The bracelet starts coming together as you are making hundreds of knots. As I’m spending hours to make one skinny 6-inch bracelet, it gives me perspective and a huge appreciation for the time and craftsmanship that comes with a handmade Persian rug.

Making bracelets is a great creative outlet for the girls and they love making them.

FINALLY! The finished painted techno-colored girls room!

My project of painting the girls room is complete! (Well, I’m still waiting on Fanny Mae to get me the pillows.)

I know it’s drawn out to a few days but that’s just how these things go. Decorating or redecorating, takes time.

THELMA & LOUISE’S ROOM

The girls share a queen platform bed that I pushed up to the wall to make it more “loungy”. It also makes the room look more spacious.

We had a comforter that actually goes with the decor so I’m super excited about this. This makes my project even less costly than I thought!

I also had found two of their dresses that I thought looked good on the walls but, after I added the custom designs on the walls…I found it be too much, so I removed them.

I’m sorry the green always looks different. It constantly changes in my house too! So weird. Warmer and more yellowy in the day, and more cold, techno green in the evening. And then changes every color in between if it’s sunny or cloudy outside.

I am LOVING their room. I love it more than my room now. My room is SO BLAH but repainting that one is not easy. The furniture is too heavy for me to move around by myself so I’m less motivated to start that project.

I think I’m going to move into this room instead. Every time I walk by it, I just have to look in and smile. I LOVE LVOE LOVE it! Makes me all giddy inside.

Dick likes it as well and agrees that our room is so drab and boring now. Well, do I hear someone volunteering to HELP me???

EXPENSES

So, basically, besides all the hours of work I put into it, cost wise, here’s roughly what I spent:

TOTAL $145!!

Not bad for a new room.

You know, when you do something yourself, you love it THAT MUCH MORE!

That’s why I love my house so much!!

Introducing Color #2: From Hep Green to Reflecting Pool.

After painting two coats of Sherwin William’s Hep Green Techno Color on the walls, I am very concerned. It’s TOO YELLOW GREEN. It looks nothing like the brochure.

Calm down. It’s ok. Maybe you just have to get used to it. Plus, it’s time for the next color.

REFLECTING POOL

My projects are always a work in progress with VERY LITTLE PLANNING. I have to take it one step at a time because I don’t really know how it’s going to turn out. I haven’t decided how I’m going to add the accent colors. I like the pattern they used in the brochure where the blue is two opposing triangles. So, I adapt it for my room and decide to put the same design on either side of the window.

The triangles are painted with a light blue that is named REFLECTING POOL.

It’s a very pretty blue. I’m SUPER EXCITED!

TAPING OFF

First, I have to measure my space so I can pinpoint the middle. This involves a measuring tape, a pencil, paint tape and remembering my geometry from my teenage years. I locate the midpoint and tape off the area with lines extending to the wall and window.

I then paint the inside of the triangles with the Reflecting Pool Blue. And because I can’t wait to see how it turns out, I bring out my hair dryer.

I pull off the tape hoping that I haven’t made a huge mistake with my decision to go TECHNO COLOR.

The green continues to change it’s shade according to how much light is shining thru the window, if it’s daytime or nighttime, if the interior lights are turned on or not.

Ok, not bad. But, I’m not loving it. The two opposing walls are blank and there’s definitely more work to be done. We’re not finished yet.

THE CUSTOM SHELF

This custom shelf was built by the previous owner of this house. It was also a girl’s room. I had emptied the two lower shelves because the girls had their clothes overflowing in those spaces. The shelf is too white and I decide this too will be painted Reflecting Pool Blue.

I LAHV-LAHV-LAHV the blue on the shelf. Oh, and by the way, I use MATTE paint for EVERY COLOR IN THE ROOM. I just wanted a muted, comfy feel…especially since we’re already going TECHNO. Balance, ying yang. I don’t know the formal or technical ways of designers for color and placement so I just go with my natural instinct.

Slowly but surely, this room is coming together. I hope. The jury is still out on if I like the green or not.

Actually, there were a few other attempts in between but I didn’t take pictures of those failures.

Finally, I decide on this as the one side…

Private Art Classes: A Look at Magda’s Home Studio

You remember I said my girls take art classes from a beautiful woman and artist, Magda, who lives down the street from me. (Click HERE).

We are so privileged to have her in our lives. She teaches the girls so much about art and I’m so thankful that she is willing to teach my girls.

Here is her studio, which is in the basement of her cozy house. The girls and I love going over there because her house is so full of love and art. It’s extremely calm and just has a great energy to it.

During art class, Magda always plays classical, calm instrumental music. Very relaxing and puts you in a creative mood.

Magda is having the girls use what they see in on the book to inspire their painting.

I had the extreme pleasure of being invited to a private art exhibit preview party for members only, even though I am not a member at the Museum.

My lovely friend, Termina-tress Linda Hamilton (right) volunteers at the Museum and assisted with the new exhibit featuring artist Anne Wilson, who is also a Professor of Fiber and Material at the Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Linda studied art at that same school and I’m so thankful that she invited me because the exhibit was FANTASTIC!!

You remember my dear friend June Cleaver? Being a fellow artist, I extended the invitation to her and had her come along. Oh yeah, it’s a girl’s art night!

ANNE WILSON

This piece is called “Rewinds”. It is made entirely of glass and stretches 12 feet long. Linda tells me each piece was mapped out by Anne and placed in specific places. When I spoke with Anne, she told me she started this project about 5 years ago. Amazing!

At first glance, before I knew that all of this was made of glass, I thought that it was actually thread that was wound around these bobbins.

I love the texture and colors and how it is lit underneath with this 12 foot long glass platform.

When I had first heard of the exhibit, honestly, I thought it wouldn’t be that interesting.

My how I was pleasantly surprised! So unique, so intracate, so visually appealing!

I’m not a technical artist but I go with how it makes me feel. I love art that stimulates the eyes and envokes feeling and thought inside you.

BOBBINS

Look how fabulous this piece is!!

Each bobbin is threaded individually…a colorful curtain of thread.

There are also these stations where you can wind your own bobbin.

Your bobbin will be used to weave a piece that will stay with the Museum.

We go upstairs to check out more art.

DEVORAH SPERBER

These pieces are made of chenille stems (pipe cleaners) that blend into a recognizable picture when seen from afar.

This circular rug’s image can be seen in the reflection of the metal post coming out of the middle of it. How cool is that???

THREAD SPOOLS

These upside down images are created by hundreds if not thousands of thread spools.

However, when viewed through the special acrylic GAZING-BALL, you can see the image in its entirety, right side-up.

How insane is that?

Love how this urn is stretched and is so fluid.

This piece makes you want to do a few takes. I think it’s because it’s so colorful. LOL

When Linda first invited me, I didn’t even know what the exhibit was about. I just wanted a night out exploring art. Then when I found out it was about textiles, weaving, bobbins, etc. I was thinking I was going to be completely bored. How pleasantly surprised I was!

The artists featured were SO incredibly talented and created such amazing pieces of art presented in such a clever and interesting way. I love it when I have happy surprises.

I definitely need to do this more often. One gets highly inspired being around fellow artists.

Edward on a Twilight cake?

Next door to the place we had sushi was this cake shop. I don’t bake at all unless you count using Duncan Hines box cakes and Nestle Tollhouse Mini cookies. However, I wish I could make cakes like these.

Martha Stewart shows me how to make bows using the Bowdabra.

I’m at my Lucy Lu’s house that she shares with her roommate, Martha Stewart, in West Hollywood. Lucy and Martha have been working hard to add some Christmas Spirit into their house and it looks fabulous.

They hung the stockings.

They decorated the tree. Looks so professional and perfect.

They are wrapping gifts.

Martha shows me how to make these beautiful bows with her new toy…

The BOWDABRA! (bow-dabra)

STEP 1

Clip a piece of thin string. This is what will tie your bow together. Martha is using a pretty gold one.

STEP 2

Place the desired fabric for the bow (one that has wiring it in works best so that it will keep its shape) thru the middle slot at the desired length and size.

STEP 3

Push down the provided tool to pinch the center of bow.

STEP 4

Now make another loop on the other side.

STEP 5

Push that down as well.

STEP 6

Martha is doing a double bow where one bow is smaller. Therefore, you need to make a smaller loop this time and repeat the steps.

STEP 7

Now remember that thin wire from before, tie a knot with it in the center.

STEP 8

Poof out your bow.

STEP 9

Add a small ornament if you wish.

STEP 10

Add some ribbon underneath.

STEP 11

Glue the bow to your gift. Martha tells me she has a crappy glue gun and because the glue is having a hard time coming out, she has to use her chin and a pencil to push it down. LOL

FINAL RESULT

Ta-da! See how easy that was? And beautiful!

Rain in Cali keeps me inside.

Shockingly, I come to the sunny state of California to cold and rain. Cold doesn’t really mean cold. It means, cold for LA…which is only mild spring-like weather for everyone else. Today was cloudy with occassional rain, and totally blah blah blah. It feels like April showers weather and is around the same temperature. High is around 60F and low around 50F. I guess I shouldn’t complain too much but I WANT SUNSHINE! So, I stay inside my sister-in-law’s (Jennifer Lopez) townhouse all day. Here are some shots around the house from the eyes of an artist with a bit of my added pizzazz.

Gifts for the girls from their private art teacher.

My girls take Private Art Classes weekly from an extremely talented artist. Magda is a dear friend and we are so lucky to have her in our lives. She has taught the girls so much about art, all the technical stuff that I have forgotten.

The girls are coming to see Magda for another lesson and it’s our last one this year since we’re leaving for California for the Holidays. We’re going to LA to see my sister and Dick’s family!! When we get to Magda’s house, she has a gift for them.

They are SUPER excited to be getting unexpected presents and immediately start to open their gifts.

Thelma’s face lights up and you can tell she loves her present.

By the way, those black dots on Thelma’s face are home-made freckles that Thelma just felt like having today by using my black eye liner.

Louise now opens hers and she’s equally thrilled at her new gift.

What are your gift girls???

Magda hand crafted these fabulous retro dolls that come with interchangeable outfits and accessories.

In addition to creating beautiful pieces of artwork, Magda is loves to sew. The dolls and their accessories are made of cloth, are stitched along the edges, and attach by velcro.

Sold only via word of mouth, Magda has sold hundreds of these hand-made dolls that come with a carrying-case so the kids won’t lose any of the pieces. They are also painted with an acrylic clear coat so if they get dirty, they wipe right off. Nice!

It’s such a great gift and PERFECT for the girls to bring on our trip!! They are excited beyond belief and won’t let me take their gifts home while they have their lesson. They want it to be within eyesight.

After I pick them up, Magda tells me next time she’ll wait until after class to give them their gifts. They were not as focused as usual since they were excited about their new gifts.

My Abstract Photography: Inspired by Photographer Tom McDaniel

I was inspired a while back after having an immensely talented photographer, Tom McDaniel, come over to my house for dinner. Tom is in an incredibly talented artist who opened my eyes to a new and different kind photography…ABSTRACT Photography.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Tom’s work. The colors are absolutely AMAZING!!!

I’ve never thought about doing abstract since photography is so literal. Inspired and by chance, I had taken some images that I felt would make good abstracts and had so much fun editing them.

The Chalk Guy: Julian Beever and his AMAZING pavement drawings.

I just got a forward from Dick’s cousin. He’s a dentist who has a lot of time to send a bunch of email forwards to us. LOL (J.K. We love you!)

I never read any long forwards. I am A.D.D. and like I said, wordy stuff with no pictures will NOT capture my attention. Short, funny stories I will read.

This last one he sent just happened to be ALL pictures of the infamous CHALK GUY. Yes, that is a chalk drawing, on the sidewalk.

Actually, I had never heard of him until I got this forward but maybe some of you may have seen his work. For those who haven’t, his works of art are done with chalk on sidewalks ALL over the world. His real name is JULIAN BEEVER and I am completely astounded by his incredibly talent to draw with chalk and without even a still life to use as a reference. It’s all done from his head!

Julian’s pieces of art are drawn three dimensionally and can only be viewed in one direction otherwise the proportions look all weird. However, when viewed correctly, they are SO realistic and absolutely AMAZING. Enjoy!!

Green Tea, Apple Cinnamon Cake & Art Time

The girls recently came across a drawing book that I had when I was a kid, saved by my dear Mom (she keeps EVERYTHING). Inspired, they wanted to learn how to draw like Mommy. I told them it just takes practice and explained some basics.

Try not to draw from memory (which usually turns out looking like a cartoon) and follow the still life with your eyes, trying to coordinate your eyes with your hands. Not easy for a kid to do but it just takes some basic directions and practice, practice, practice. You have to build those muscles in your fingers so that you have better control for drawing.

Since it’s after dinner, we need some dessert and green tea to stimulate our creative energy. Yes, that’s exactly why.

I love to collect tea sets and tea cups. I broke the teapot that goes with this set but the cups are so cute and original.

The sit in these curved, rounded saucers and they have a lid to keep your tea hot. Love it!!

If you didn’t know it, green tea is super good for you. It has tons of antioxidants and has been known to help with weight loss and fighting off cancer. Since we’re having yummy but unhealthy apple cinnamon cake that our friends brought over, the tea goes really well don’t you think? Remember yin, yang. Balance. LOL
