A Mini Cooper S (for Sport).

Totally loaded and with a white hardtop and white racing stripe.

The racing stripe is such a must on the Cooper!

Remember how I told you I like the VW Bugs but I prefer a Mini.

Well, after driving this car, I can definitely confirm, if you want a small car, the Mini Cooper is the way to go!

And you MUST get the SPORT version.

This little thing is a rocket!!

I wish I could keep it but two doors is not going to do it!

I first laid eyes on the Mini when I was traveling around Europe with my sister after I graduated from college. That was almost 15 years ago and we didn’t have them in the US then and so I was like, “Damn! This thing is TINY!!!”.

The Sport means it’s a supercharged I-4…so this light little thing gets about 163 hp.

If you’ve ever seen the movie The Italian Job (great movie!) with Charlize Theron and Mark Walberg, you would be a total fan of this car.

And you know that high pitch, buzzing sound it makes that sounds like it’s zooming?

I thought it might be a Hollywood special effect but no, it totally makes that sound!

Love it!

Obviously, if you have kids this might not be for you, unless this is just a second car that you want to keep as a toy.

There is limited space in this little thing.

Check out the rims on this one!

Someone put these custom Drag Wheels on it. Super sharp!!

And, because it has a Navigation system (which seems to be a rarity), the odometer is right on top of the steering wheel, versus in the center console where you see the large round Nav screen is…which I think is totally weird!

Such a beauty! I love it!

And although Mini has come out with a Mini Clubman, which is their 4-door version, it’s still too small for my growing family.

However, a girl can still play and enjoy it while I can!

(In Dick’s defense, he and the girls already had given me a fantastic Mother’s Day surprise the evening before. He and the girls had cleaned the house and mopped it for me as well while I had taken a late nap.  I’m a no-frills kind of girl so to me, this was super sweet!)

The biscuits and gravy were totally calling my name.

And the yummy, crunchy hashbrowns!

The girls were all about the hashbrowns too and the pancakes.

So as I enjoyed my breakfast, the girls played after they ate.

They’re still not to big to play on this thing.

I had made plans to go to a Garden Show with my Mom and the girls for Mother’s Day. So, we picked up my Mom, who was already prepared for the intensely sunny day.

Love the hat Mom! I’m guessing she didn’t want to put it on all the way in fear of having HAT HEAD in case she decided to take it off.

Much to our dismay, as soon as we took the exit off the interstate to get to the show, I felt the car was making a strange noise. So, I pulled over to check it out.

Lovely! A flat!!

Whereas I can now take this things in stride and write it off as “shit happens”, my mom’s initial reaction is to panic and stress. It’s a flat tire! And it’s not like we’re stuck in the hood somewhere.

Now, I’ve had about three instances where I’ve had to change a tire myself so I’m pretty well-versed in it.

Once when I was working at the Saturn manufacturing plant as a co-op student, where back then buying a non-American car was considered unpatriotic and unfavorable among the workers, so someone decided to slash my tire because I drove a Japanese car…in fact, it was that Honda I just sold.

Still, changing a tire is not exactly fun…plus, I’m too pregnant and it’s HOT! Luckily, we had AAA and the gentleman was there in about 20 minutes…pretty good for being a Sunday and Mother’s Day on top of that!

Plus, this gentleman has all the right tools, which make it much easier and faster!

Ten minutes later and he was done!

Not exactly great looking but it will do! I feel so GHETTO.

Luckily, this car has a full-sized spare and we can still head to the Garden Show.

Off to a somewhat rough start but what can you do?

Except, we don’t play PUNCH bugs. I don’t like being punched.

Getting punched unexpectedly could easily throw this Momma into a bad mood.

I already get a slight heart attack when they scream, BUG!!!

And, nowadays, these bugs are EVERYWHERE, making Dick and I think…do we need to tap into this market?

I like them but I think I would prefer having a MINI Cooper.

It takes a REAL man to be seen in this…maybe…

Maybe it’s his kid’s car or his wife’s car.

A 1991 Honda Accord.

Pretty Swexy, no???

My parents bought this car brand new in 1991 have had it ever since.

And although it’s not a LOOKER with the top coat peeling, it actually still drives great.

Look, it even has the short-lived “automatic” seat belts.

I remember thinking this car was SUPER COOL when we first got the car.

This was even my ride for a bit when I was in High School and College and has been through many years of wear and tear even though it’s been mechanically maintained.

But, my mom has a hard time parting with it like she does many other things (She’s a semi-hoarder.) Since they bought it new many years ago and know the history of it, they feel they should keep it. I don’t. And now that I’ve found them a new car, I’ve convinced them to get rid of this one. YES!!

I told my parents I would sell it for them. They hate selling stuff. Plus, I know that if they sell it, they won’t get but pennies for it so Dick and I work our magic on it.

Dick is pretty impressed with how well it still runs.

I don’t think they girls are quite as enamored, especially since we were just cruising around in a brand new Lexus IS250!

This Honda still has the traditional, manual roll-down windows…you know, where you have to use your arm to crank the window down?

It definitely takes some arm strength to roll these babies up and down.

What? Not as cool as the back-up camera on the Lexus girls???

I told the girls I’m keeping this car for when they’re ready to drive.

And then there was silence.

LMAO!

They weren’t very enthusiastic about this.

We take it through the car wash and detail it THOROUGHLY.

This family thrives on teamwork.

I love it when we all work together and we have so many fun memories from it.

Plus, I want the girls to have a good work ethic and understand that it takes hard work to make money.

Plus, it’s these kinds of things that keep us humble.

THE LOW BALLERS

This car has gotten more interest than any other car I’ve ever sold. Usually, I may get 2-3 interested people. This time, I had 10-15 interested buyers.

Of course, there are always the low-ballers…those who think you’re desperate to sell and offer you some crazy crap offer that is WAY off. One time, I had this guy who text-offered me one early morning for a different car I was selling.

“I’ll give you $6000 cash today. “

Mind you, this car was listed for $8400.

And everyone offers cash.

It’s all the same to me.

“No, thanks.”

“How about $6001?”

You think you’re being funny?

“$6001.28″

I don’t know why I’m assuming it’s a dude but it just seems like it would be. Only guys would be so dumb. Anyway…It irked me and I was in no mood for this today and so I responded with,

“FU”

Did I mention it was early morning?

I’m annoyed because I’ve wasted one text too many on this ridiculousness already.

Of course, the interested buyer had a different tone in his next text.

“All kidding aside, what’s  your bottom dollar.”

I had already made up my mind that I didn’t want to sell my beautiful car to this dumbass when I told him FU. I send him one final text.

“$10,000″

Yeah, that’s right, the price just went up. Listen, I love cars and finding beautiful, clean cars at great prices isn’t easy and you just don’t qualify or deserve to have my nice car!

THE TRADE-INS

People never cease to surprise me. I got this text for a BMW 5-series I was selling:

“Would u like to trade for my 87 Cadillac fleetwood hearse really fun toy or daily driver”

OMG, seriously? For a BMW 5-Series?!?!?

Quite a sense of humor.

Dead End alright but…

Fun toy??? Daily driver???

I didn’t even respond.

SOLD

After answering calls, setting up appointments and showing the car to prospective buyers, our hard work pays off. I sold the car for WAY more than my parents expected.

Set your standards high and work hard to get there.

Luxury or dilapidated, you gotta see the potential in everything if you wanna make the BENJAMINS!

And BELIEVING will probably get you the furthest!

(Something I have to constantly remind myself of.)

The other day I had to take a Lexus in to get a 46-point inspection done on it.

Not having the time to wait around for it, I asked Lexus to give me a loaner…and boy did they! Lexus gave me a choice of either a RX (the small SUV) or the ES (mid-size sedan) or the IS (compact sedan).

I love, love, love the IS250 and haven’t test driven the new ones so naturally, I jumped at the opportunity.

Not only is it in the exact color that I would love to buy (Metallic Charcoal Grey), this car is just BEAUTIFUL!

Although it’s small, I’m TOTALLY DIGGIN’ this car!!  Loaded, and powerful with precision performance, I could easily get a few speeding tickets in this car. Such a fun car to drive!! Hugs corners, easy to drive and super smooth yet peppy!

Do you see the two silver flappers behind the steering wheel?

Those are steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.  They allow you to manually shift between gears at the touch of your finger. Although I like a traditional manual shifter knob, this is pretty cool.

Notice too how Thelma is in the little screen, that’s the Navigation system but there is also a back-up camera so you don’t run over anything, or anyone!

The girls are lovin’ this car! Ummm, who can blame them!!

“Mommy, can we keep this one???”

My girls are getting to experience and learn about all different kinds of cars.

I’m not sure I know of any other girls who can recognize as many different cars as they can and at this age.

Now, I’m a total BMW fan but this Lexus IS250 is REALLY calling my name.

I had a friend who once asked me if there was really a difference between luxury cars and regular cars.

The ride, the sound, the extras, the design, the comfort, the engineering…

There MOST DEFINITELY is!!

Too bad it’s too small for this Mommy who has to cart around 3 kids soon.

Makes me think of going to a Sonic-like joint from the 60s with the roller skating servers.

So, remember I wasn’t a fan of the pink Caddie…unless  it was a Classic?

Well, this one is STUNNING! I love it!

I can appreciate the looks of this car but for me, it’s…Too black. Too pimp.

1959 De Ville Convertible.

This one is Dick’s favorite and verrryyy pretty.

I love the front grill and the black and white leather seats…very classy. But, I saw a few others online in different colors and really, this particular Caddie is beautiful because of the combination of the exterior white and  complimentary interior colors. They others weren’t that nice.

However, this happens to be Louise’s favorite.

I love that she has this eccentric taste!

I’m not a fan of the color.

I might like this car if it were white.

Ugghhh…talk about a boat! The rear end is just weird how is slenders down and the rear tire has only half the wheel showing. I just don’t know about this one.

Should be called the Seville Pimpe.

We were going to a new park and they were following us in their car.

Except, my mom is driving (She always drives because she gets motion sickness if she is a passenger.) and she is TOTALLY OVERLY CAUTIOUS…to the point that her overcautiousness will probably cause an accident (and it has actually).

We’re going down a main road where the speed limit is 45mph. But, people probably go about 50-55mph.

My mom is probably going about 35mph or so because I can’t hardly even see their car and Dick has slowed down to about 40mph and they’re STILL far behind.

Fanny Mae does not understand the concept of “following” someone. That’s them…WAY back there. You have to keep up otherwise you’re gonna get left behind or lost! But my mom refuses and has to go at her own, cautious pace. Patience, patience, I know…

God, I hope I don’t end up being ONE OF THOSE ASIANS when I get old.

I’ll just have to hire a driver.

ALFONZO’S SUPER CARS.

Really?? MINOR front end damage? Easy Fixer-Upper?

Dick was like, “The car is split in half!”

I’m not sure how easy it would be fix this precision, high-performance Italian driving machine where many of the parts are hand-made but I’m sure it would cost a pretty penny to fix this one.

I’m like, who would drive such a thing?

Upon closer examination, I see the side emblem.

Ok, Mary Kay, makes sense now…except…it was a DUDE driving the car!

Ummm…I hope you were driving your wife’s car that day.

Unless it looks like this, ain’t no way I would own a pink Caddie.

Dick spots the car of his dreams while we were driving around.

It was a beautiful  antique 1968 Mercedes 250S.

This car is in MINT condition and has only 36,000 miles on it. Unbelieveable!

Look at the old school knob to adjust the seat. I’m not sure what the leather looks like underneath the fuzzy blue seat covers but I’m pretty sure it’s just as fabulous as the outside of the car.

I don’t know if I could ever own a car like this.

Don’t get me wrong, the car is GORGEOUS!

But, with the being such a rare piece, there’s no way I could drive it around and not be paranoid that some one would hit it or scratch it up.

Such a stunning piece. And it can be yours if you have $20,000 to spare.

We were only there for about 30 minutes when the dark clouds start rolling in.

Still savoring the moment, the girls and Dick were enjoying their peaches.

Not sure why she has this face but it’s not the peach!

Anyway, I’m concerned because we left the top down in the car and although it’s not raining, it was going to!

Only a matter of WHEN.

Then, the drops start coming so we’re scrambling frantically (and laughing all the while) to get everything together.

By the time we get to the car, it’s really coming down.

To make matters worse, the top decides not to want to go back up!

We’re getting poured on!

Luckily, after a bit, we discover that it was just USER ERROR because Dick failed to close the trunk properly in our mad rush, which will cause the top to get stuck.

PHEW!

Another reason why I am no longer a fan of convertibles.

We found one and the kids (including the big one that is my husband) LOVE it!

They love it so much they don’t want to sell it.

It’s like a roller coaster ride for them.

I’m not sure what Louise is doing but she’s always cracking me up.

I always loved convertibles (you remember I had a Miata) but now I’m not so sure I am a fan of convertibles any longer.

Cause unless I have on a hat, my long hair is constantly SLAPPING me in the face.

I can hardley see sometimes.

There’s nothing elegant about having your hair fly in a million different directions.

And then, when you’re at your destination, your hair is one big tangled mop!

And, I hate that it sticks to my lipstick.

Dick and the girls don’t care because they all have short hair.

Yes, it’s nice to have fresh air, but is it really fresh?

You’re eating everyone’s dust and crap that comes out of their exhaust.

No, I think not.

While waiting for the Lexus guy to find the proper one that fits, the girls are eating the watermelon I brought for the Harley Boys at Reasonable Ron’s.

Finally I get the key and we’re off!

REASONABLE RON’S AGAIN

Dick has left to go to Gotham City again so I’m on my own to go downtown with the girls after I get the lock key for the wheels.

My mom would just DIE if she saw this place and the boys that run it. The fact that I’m coming downtown always freaks her out because downtown anywhere to her must seem like the streets of the HOOD in New York or something. Plus, if she knew that I’m also bringing the girls, alone… She would go INSANE and make me INSANE in the process.

This is why I don’t tell her these things. Innocence is bliss. Fanny Mae just can’t help but stress about these things so it’s just better for her AND me that she doesn’t know. Anyway, I love Reasonable Ron’s…it has so much character.

I bring watermelon for the boys because it’s a scorcher of a day and I think they’ll enjoy it…the same watermelon that I had to tell the girls to save. The boys were super appreciative and I was happy they enjoyed it.

While they’re changing out the tires and rotating them, they let my girls try on the Harley for size.

Great, only 7 and 8 and already posing with HARLEY’S…if that just don’t make a parent proud.

REASONABLE RON’S USED TIRES

It doesn’t make sense to purchase brand new wheels for something I won’t be keeping lon so Dick and I take the girls and we’re off to REASONABLE RON’S USED TIRES. This is a great place to go for used tires that still have some tread on them and at REASONABLE prices.

There they were, about 4 biker dudes. A couple of them sitting around and another couple of them were putting tires on for people.

The get to work right away.

These Harley boys have been working at this successful used tired joint for about 20-25 years.

I just love coming here and taking pictures.

The boys are always really polite and say hi to my girls.

As you can see, we expose my girls to everything.

I don’t want them to see just the suburbs.

That’s not a true picture of what the world looks like.

WHERE’S THE LOCK KEY???

So after they already had the car jacked up and loosened all the lug nuts…all except for the LOCK NUT. Up until recently, I had no idea there was a LOCK NUT that was a different size than the rest, therefore a preventative for THEFT.

The Big Biker Dude asks me, “You got the lock key for this car?”

Dick’s looking everywhere…no lock key.

CRAP. We have to come back after we go get a lock key from Lexus.

This would be a car I wouldn’t mind having. Dick LOVES it. Wants one. Good thing we have the same taste. Mine is, of course, better.

It’s a LOTUS. Of course, immediately I think ESPRIT, like the one in Back to the Future.

The back is VERY NICE, however, without seeing the front, I won’t know if I really like it. So, I try to pass it.

I speed up to try to catch it, but as soon as the LOTUS spots this, it starts to go EVEN FASTER. You know how some people are. As soon as they see you’re trying to pass them, they GUN IT! Hence, the blurry picture.

Aha! A light. Crap, it turned green too fast.

Finally, I catch the LOTUS at the next light.

From the side, it looks pretty good but I need to PASS it to see the front.

First, I wanna see what kind of person drives this kind of car. The windows are tinted and there was a glare. Could be anyone from the RICH HOUSEWIFE to the MID-LIFE CRISIS EXECUTIVE or some UGLY DUDE who thinks a nice car will make up for what’s lacking BELOW. Sorry Dude, it WON’T!

Well, I you can’t see much but it definitely looks like a WOMAN and she’s sporting some black leather racing gloves that are cut off at the knuckle. Are gloves really necessary unless you’re RACING??? I guess someone is trying to make a fashion statement.

I end up passing her and now I’m too far to get a good shot and it’s hard as hell to try to take a picture while your driving. It’s like texting.

She starts to speed back up again. This is the best shot I’m gonna get.

UMMM, ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME???

So then I go the grocery store and guess who’s going to the same place?  She’s in front of me now and just happens to be going to the same place I am. I wonder if she thinks I’m following her. She parks further down and so I go down a different lane so she doesn’t think I’m stalking her.

Plus, being the lazy Jane that I am, I always look for a spot UP FRONT. I’m one of those that will drive around and around and around until I get a spot UP FRONT. Or, sometimes I’ll STALK PARK too…especially during the holidays.

Anyway, nothing up front but I do see this lady walking all the way from the back of the parking lot, dressed from head to toe in black and has on those large black Jackie-O type sunglass…that’s my LOTUS DRIVER. I was right, RICH HOUSEWIFE. (Ok, I’m judging. Bad Jane.)

I roll down my window and tell her that she has a nice ride.

“Beautiful car you got there.”

(I feel like I’m hitting on her or something.)

“Oh thanks! I bought it as a present for myself for my 62nd birthday!”

As soon as she said that, I look a little closer. Buying yourself a LOTUS for your 62nd birthday is FIERCE but lay off the plastic surgery woman! Girlfriend looked like she was headed down the same road as that CATWOMAN and now HEIDI MONTAG. Who is this girl anyway? If it weren’t for Perez, I wouldn’t have the slightest idea who she is. Guess it’s because I don’t watch that ridiculous show THE HILLS.

Anyway, I ask her if she minds if I take some pictures of her car. Of course not!

I go online and find out this is a LOTUS ELISE. It kinda looks like the old Toyota MR2 only WAY NICER!

First thing I wanna know: HOW MUCH IS IT?

MSRP: $47,250.

NOT BAD!! I was thinking this was at least $80k-$100k. I guess it’s like the BOXTER for PORCHE. Something more affordable than the ULTIMATE PORSHE, the 911! Looks similar, less performance but still a nice ride for those who want to look like a million bucks but don’t have a million bucks to spend.

Second thing I wanna know: ENGINE & PERFORMANCE!

It’s a 1.8 Liter, 4-Cyliner, DOHC with 189 hp and 133 ft lb torque.

Wow, only 4 cyliners! Very similar to my old Miata. A little more power.

It goes 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Not bad. Not bad.

And finally: FUEL EFFICIENCY

Considering it’s only a 4-cylinder, the fuel efficienct should be decent.

What is that white boxy thing in the front there?

I’ve never seen one before. Couldn’t even begin to tell what kind it was.

I keep driving hoping to catch up with it so I can see.

Even with my lasered eyes, you’d be surprised how close you have to get to see what kind of car this is.

Finally, I get a break to pass the dude (who was a young guy).

It says TUBE…well, that’s what I think it says.

So, then I go look it up and actually, my eyes do fail me…it’s CUBE.

(Don’t you think the C looks like a lower case T? Well I do.)

So, what is this KROM CUBE?

Well, from what I can tell by reading this article by AUTOGUIDE online, it’s a SPECIAL EDITION NISSAN that has 4 cylinders, 1.8L (starting), 122hp (that’s not that much, my miata got more than that), 30mpg (not bad!), has lots of trim and bells & whistles inside, and starts at around $14,000.

I can’t decide if it’s UGLY or CUTE.

Of course, as an artist, I care first about the aesthetics.

I guess I’ll need to drive one to see.

I think Nissan is hoping it’ll be like the PT CRUISER was for Chrysler. They’re hoping it’ll grow into a CULT like the PT Cruiser’s following, where people will start painting all kinds of CRAZY SHIT on their car to customize it. And, it’ll probably happen too.

WTF are these people thinking??? I mean seriously?

It looks like they hit one of those trucks carrying a bunch of chickens and all the feathers got stuck to these “stylin’ rollers” truck and got plastered wet to it. YUCK!

It’s so GHETTO. I didn’t have time to take a picture of the entire car cause I was zooming in on this atrociousness but the FUZZINESS is also the covers for their tail lights and was the cover for their rear view mirror.

I mean it looks like some cat PUKED a bunch of FUR BALLS all over their car!

The Ninja star rims are not doing it for me either.
