Fulfilling my bet with Thelma: Camping in the Minivan

IMG_8173-1

Thelma made a bet with me that if she was able to fast and abstain from eating for a day, I would then camp out in the car with her overnight, in our yard. This is not something I’m too excited about doing and I thought hoped maybe she would forget about it but alas, no. For the background story, click HERE

Thelma has attempted this a couple times. Unsuccessful because we were doing something, going somewhere where we’re eating out, or we’re at someone’s house. She started off this random day asking me if we were doing anything special. I was confused and was like, “why?”. She she didn’t want to make it harder and torture herself. Smart girl. LOL. Thelma spent most of the day keeping busy, drinking water, and didn’t really complain about being hungry. Even though I wasn’t thrilled to be sleeping in the minivan, I still thought it would be a good experience for Thelma given that there are many children that go without food daily and when they are fed, it’s hardly anything at all. One day is nothing in comparison.

So, by 10pm, I felt this was enough time. Thelma was pretty hungry by this point so I decided to take the girls to get some pizza since Thelma was successfully able to contain herself around food all day. (Yes, it’s late. We’re late nighters in this family.)

Poor things were so hungry. Since Thelma endured all the harship, she got her own kids cheese with pineapple. Me and Louise shared a tomato basil…the mozzarella was so RUBBERY! Yuk! Note to self, never again.

That weekend, I decided to make good on my bet with her. She set up the van with blankets, pillows and a movie…Ratatouille was her choice. Great choice! I absolutely LOVE this movie!!

Usually when we watch movies at home, it puts me to sleep. So, I’ve seen half of many movies! This time was no different only I hardly made it past the first 30 minutes.

We had our pink flashlight, cell phones and mace ready to go. I hope no serial killers are out tonight.

It took us a few tries to get comfortable. These leather seats feel nothing like my king mattress at home. Sigh. I was tossing a turning all night…Partly to the discomfort and partly due to paranoia. I would wake up in a delirium thinking someone was peeping inside watching us. Yikes!

A day of fasting for Thelma. A night of discomfort for me. The memories from this event will last us a lifetime! Thanks for motivating Mommy to do these crazy things!! I guess craziness runs in the family.
