Enjoying Nature: A picnic by the river in the mountains.

IMG_7096-23

Every summer we go to the mountains to chill by the river and enjoy the beautiful nature that we have access to. We unplug ourselves for the day since there’s no TV, computers, or cell phone reception. This year, we’ve been so busy that the girls and I have made a few trips with my parents and sister but Dick has yet to go. So, the other day when it was nice and hot, we packed a picnic and went to the mountains for the day with Dick.

It’s a beautiful drive to the mountains. Of course, I’m taking pictures.

We stop to get tubes. Tubing is super fun and it’s only $8/tube per day.

Now where are we going to put those tubes???

Oh yes, the trunk! Good thing I bought those bungee cords.

We always keep them in the car. They come in handy all the time!

Ok, finally there. Our designated “special spot” that we go to every time where in the mountains.

Our spot is private and quiet. Only 3-4 families max can picnic here. Parking is scarce as well.

So what do we usually do when we first get up there? We eat! Because we pack up and leave first thing in the morning, we don’t have time for breakfast. We don’t eat until we get up to the mountains.

Looks like I packed sandwiches, guacamole, pickles, and stuff…

I love Louise’s hair braided like this.

The water is frigidly cold making it difficult to motivate yourself to get in at first.

But you just have to take that initial plunge and the water feels absolutely refreshing and clean. Since mountain water is not stagnant and constantly moving, the water is kept clean by constant filtration from the rocks.

We chill. Dick is king of chill.

What I love about being up here is that it is so peaceful and healing. I’ve been white water rafting in Costa Rica and going down this river, it looks very similar and the scenery is just as beautiful.

The girls are able to play and explore and let their imagination go wild.

Sometimes they play separately.

Then they join forces together.

And then separately again. It’s great.

I love that they can independently play and entertain themselves.

Thelma’s canal has gotten quite intricate.

Since I can’t bring my camera because it’s not waterproof, you can’t see how beautiful it is when you tube down the river. Some parts are a little fast and bumpy due to rocks but for the most part, it’s smooth sailing. And actually, the fast areas are the fun ones. This is the first year I’ve let the girls tube with us. They had a blast! This is us walking to where we want to start down the river. The further the walk, the longer the ride, the longer the walk back. Still fun and totally worth it!!

If you want a fun-filled, relaxing, nature-enjoying day with the family, might I suggest a wonderful day in the mountains! And look, you’re kids are worn out by the end of the day!
