There are certain hazards that come with the job. It’s just goes with the territory. Today, I sliced off a chunk of my skin peeling potatoes. It’s just the risk one takes when one is feeding one’s family. You don’t even think about it. You just do it. Yet another hazard in the throws of house-chores and mommy-hood. I’m peeling potatoes for a chicken barley soup with carrots and potatoes and I’m using my machete-like peeler, bought directly in Vietnam.
This hand-crafted peeler has out-peeled any peeler that I’ve ever owned…and I do have a more “conventional” Wusthof brand peeler. Even given it’s well-known name, my machete still does the job faster and easier. See how well my machete-peeler peels the carrots in long strips? And the more conventional one in small strips? Small strips=More work.
Well, the dang thing is super sharp and works so well that it took off a chunk of my skin while I was peeling my small potatoes! And from my MIDDLE FINGER nonetheless! Of all the fingers to fall victim to the blade!!!
Because I have to keep the injured finger separate from the others to avoid further injury (b/c it hurts like a MOTHER when I get it wet!!), everyone mistakeny seems to think that I’m giving them the finger. Now if I was to tell you off, I’m not going to do it with some lame finger jesture. Kinda childish don’t you think???
No honey, I’m not giving you the finger! My middle finger has been injured! See???
It’s going to be great fun washing my hair today. Is there some kind of worker’s comp for this? Paid time off? Guess I won’t hold my breath…

I want one of those machete-peelers!! When is your next trip to Vietnam? Or is there a easier place to get them? That looks like it is worth the risk of losing a finger.
Good luck on workers comp. I still trying to figure out how the sick leave works on this job!?!?

You crack me up. Sorry about your finger though. Middle man down! I usually injure myself cooking as well, but I’m pretty sure I don’t even own a peeler…would a cheese grater work? Kidding!!!

Sara-I’ll keep an eye out for one for you.
Ash-I’m sure a cheese grater would do just as much damage. Maybe I need to look for a machete-potato peeler for you too.

Big surprise, but I’m not real big on either preparing food or those odd “vegetable” thingies. I’m more of a “let’s go out to eat” kinda girl. So, as I’m sure you were probably planning on picking up a third weapon of mass destruction for my benefit…..don’t worry about it! I’m good with the few utensils I have.
